Robotic Pipe Cleaning for Challenging Underground Sewer Systems
Municipal wastewater systems require regular maintenance to prevent pipeline blockages, sediment accumulation, and reduced drainage capacity. However, cleaning underground sewer pipelines is often challenging due to confined spaces, limited access, and hazardous working conditions.
A municipal wastewater operator in Mexico required a safer and more efficient solution for removing sludge and accumulated solids from an 80-meter underground sewer structure and a deep wet well. The customer needed a system capable of removing sewage solids and sludge buildup from a 80-meter underground sewer structure, as well as cleaning a 10-meter diameter and 10-meter deep cylindrical wet well.
To meet these requirements, Elephant Dredging developed a customized robotic pipe cleaning solution that enables remote operation, underwater cleaning, and long-distance sludge removal without requiring workers to enter hazardous areas.

Customer Challenges: Long-Distance Sewer Pipeline Cleaning Requirements
The Mexican municipal project involved several difficult maintenance conditions:
880m Underground Sewer Structure Sludge Removal (Diameter 600 mm)
The customer needed equipment that could travel inside a long underground sewer pipeline and effectively remove:
- Sludge buildup
- Sewage solids
- Sediment accumulation
- Pipeline blockages
Traditional manual cleaning methods were inefficient and created safety risks because workers had to operate in confined underground spaces.
Deep Wet Well Cleaning
The project also included cleaning a cylindrical wet well with:
- Diameter: 10 meters
- Depth: 10 meters
The cleaning system needed to operate underwater, remove accumulated solids from the bottom, and transport the collected material outside the wet well.

Customized Robotic Pipe Cleaning Solution
Based on the customer’s requirements, Elephant Dredging designed a customized sludge removal robot system YG450 combining crawler mobility, powerful suction capability, and remote-control technology.
The solution was designed specifically for municipal sewer pipe cleaning applications where traditional equipment cannot operate effectively.
Crawler System for Underground Pipeline Operation
The robotic pipe cleaning system uses a crawler structure that allows stable movement inside underground sewer structures and drainage channels.
Key advantages include:
- Strong traction on uneven pipeline surfaces
- Stable underwater operation
- Compact design for confined underground environments
- Flexible movement in complex pipeline conditions
The crawler system enables the robot to perform long-distance cleaning operations while reducing the need for manual intervention.
Powerful Suction System for Sludge and Solid Waste Removal
To handle municipal sewage solids and sediment deposits, the system is equipped with a high-performance suction pump.
Main configuration:
- Pump flow: 100–250 m³/h (customizable)
- Pump head: up to 30 m
- Long-distance sludge transportation capability
- Continuous sediment and solid waste removal
The high-performance suction system is designed to remove sludge, sediment, sewage solids, and accumulated debris. The collected materials are continuously pumped through discharge pipelines, enabling efficient remote sludge removal in underground and confined environments.
Remote-Controlled Sludge Removal Without Human Entry
Safety was one of the most important requirements of this municipal maintenance project.
The remote-controlled dredging robot allows operators to perform sludge removal from the surface without entering underground sewer structures or deep wet wells. This no-entry operation significantly reduces risks associated with toxic gases, confined spaces, and hazardous working conditions.
The system is equipped with:
- Wireless remote control for safe operation from above ground
- Underwater LED lighting for improved visibility in dark environments
- Real-time monitoring for accurate equipment control
- No-man-entry sludge removal capability
By eliminating the need for workers to enter underground areas, this remote sludge removal solution improves maintenance safety while maintaining efficient cleaning performance in challenging environments.s.
